UPDATE: What To Do After You Hit Submit

Here Is What You Should Do After You Have Submitted Your MBA Application.

The most crucial thing you can do after completing your MBA application is to continue connecting with your target business schools. Yes, you have other MBA applications to submit to several institutions. That is a priority, so go ahead and do it. Even if you have completed all of your submissions, for example, you have just submitted all of your Round #2 applications and it is the middle or late January, you should continue to contact your target MBA schools. This will help you to stand out and appear more competitive.

  1. KEEP INDEXING AND MAKING A LIST OF WHAT YOU'VE BEEN DOING SINCE SUBMITTING YOUR MBA APPLICATION.

Keep note of the individuals you've been having talks with and who you've been reaching out to at your target schools. If you believe your GPA is poor, consider taking a class to help you improve. Most essential, continue to pursue leadership opportunities at work. Simply keep going since the adventure isn't finished (yet)!

2. BEGIN CREATING BULLET POINTS FOR A POSSIBLE WAITLIST LETTER.

Suppose Harvard, or any other institution, places you on a waitlist. And when Harvard asks for your updates, you should have 500 words worth of updates. Not just any old update, but meaningful updates. If you can fill half a page of an update letter with:

“This is how I’ve continued to engage your community, this is how I’ve learned more about it, and this is how I feel like I’m an even better candidate for your business school…”

Your MBA application will appear more competitive as a result. Continue to assemble your army of bullet points. You'll almost certainly need to bring these modifications to the table for the more competitive institutions at some point. Especially if you're on the verge of admission if it's a very tough MBA application year.

Tips for getting off the waitlist.

3. KEEP ENGAGING YOUR TARGET MBA SCHOOLS.

Continue to demonstrate to the admissions committee that you want to be a member of their business school community. If they call you from their waitlist, you should accept without hesitation. You should even include it in your waitlist update letter. If an admissions committee person contacts you, you should respond, "Yes! I accept my position at Wharton. I'm coming to West Philadelphia!" As a result, they have no question that you are committed.

4. THE LAST THING AN ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE WOULD LIKE TO DO IS CONTINUE EXTENDING MBA INVITATIONS.

When the admissions committee opens your folder and sees nothing new, no modifications, nothing significantly different, they will go on to the next MBA candidate. They will proceed to the applicant on the list who has submitted substantial revisions. They know that the candidate wants to be successful and accept a place at their business school. The admissions committee needs to know that if they contact that MBA candidate, they will accept right away. They don't want to keep giving invites to candidates who will decline since it affects their rankings. Furthermore, it creates so much ambiguity and rework for the admissions committee during the admissions process that it only adds more noise and no signal.
