DEFINING BERKELEY HAAS’ FOUR PRINCIPLES

Why Defining Berkeley Haas' Four "Key Principles" is so Important

The Berkeley Haas MBA application deadline is around the corner. Before you write and review a single essay, you have to take stock of their overarching instructions. Haas has taken their “Defining Principles” out of one specific essay question and placed them at the top of the entire application. Why? The simple reason that you have to hit all four principles throughout your application. Here's how:

At Berkeley-Haas, our distinctive culture is defined by four key principles — Question the status quo; Confidence without attitude; Students always; and Beyond yourself. We seek candidates from a broad range of cultures, backgrounds, and industries who demonstrate a strong cultural fit with our program and defining principles. Please use the following essays as an opportunity to reflect on and share with us the values, experiences, and accomplishments that have helped shape who you are.

What does this mean?

This means you should try hit all four of these principles. Hit all of them at some point in varying degrees in your MBA application. It also means, putting them at the front and center of your application. It should be clear to the admissions committee that your background and your goals reflect these principles, as well as your reason for wanting to study at Haas.

Another reason for mentioning these defining principles at the top, is that it serves as a reminder that being yourself, being distinct, and having a firm perspective to share is better than resembling the “prototypical” applicant.

So, what is Haas trying to say by giving applicants these principles?

It means that you should talk about these principles in your application essays. Here’s how:

1.”Question the status quo"

This comes from Haas being such an innovative business school. It’s technology heavy, it has Silicon Valley on its doorstep, it’s global and cares about social values. Berkeley cares about social equality. This is a perfect way to tap into their vibe in your MBA application.

2. "Confidence without attitude"

Haas is all about proper preparation for making an impact in the workforce. Evidently, Haas and their dean Rich Lyons, know that arrogance and swagger, or rather “paper prestige” won’t get you anywhere once you are sitting down with recruiters towards the end of your MBA. They are looking for applicants to have rock star credentials who show humility.

3. “Students always”

This is a nod to the student-friendly culture of Haas. A brief mention in the application is usually enough.

4. “Beyond yourself”

This is about social justice and making an impact beyond your own life. Most candidates will want to talk about the broader world and making an impact in a short answer or in the What makes you feel alive? Essay #1.

So, once you have these four principles as your guiding star, you can get into the Haas essay questions.
