How Business Schools View Deferral Requests

How Requests for a Deferral Are Viewed at Business Schools

The MBA application cycle is nearing an end. And, even if you've been accepted to more than one school, you may not feel prepared to attend college - at least not at those programs. If this sounds similar, you may want to consider requesting a deferment. However, when you request a deferral, take into account what business schools genuinely think. We provide you with some more insight in this blog post.

1. They Assume you intend to reapply to your top school, which is most likely not their school.

Even if you explain to the admissions committee that you need to delay for personal or professional reasons, they will assume that you will reapply to another program.

2. They assume you don't have your act together if you mention finances.

Before you apply, the admissions committee will expect you to be aware of your financial situation and accept responsibility for financing your education. They recognize that business school is a significant commitment, and that there are many equally competent individuals who can afford it. So requesting an extra year to save more money isn't very convincing.

3. They realize there is a significant probability you will never graduate, therefore they grow less committed in developing you.

Deferred applicants have a significant attrition rate, according to statistics. Schools recognize that if you request a postponement, you are less likely to attend, and they are less inclined to incentivize you to matriculate with scholarships, preferential housing, and so on.

4. They may be offended personally.

Admissions staff have most certainly come to know you during the application process and may have even advocated for you to be admitted ahead of other prospects. As a result, they may be disappointed that your plans have changed. It's a good idea to be aware of this before starting any deferral conversations, so you can respond accordingly.
