MFA/MBA Dual Degree Programs: A Rundown

Detailed Information Regarding MFA and MBA Joint Degree Programs

Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) dual-degree programs come in a variety of forms depending on your interests. These dual-degree programs often enable you to complete both degrees more quickly than if you pursued them separately and train you for positions of leadership in your respective fields. In this blog post, we'll go through what to expect and what your possibilities are.

  1. MBA/MFA in Theater Management

MBA and MFA in Theater Management dual-degree programs can be finished in 4 years and you can start with classes for either the MBA or the MFA. Most of the time, these dual-degree programs are made for students who want to be leaders in a theater. In addition to traditional coursework, they may include seminars and workshops. Some programs may offer an optional theater management fellowship where you can work closely with a professional theater manager to gain professional work experience. Other courses that might be offered in the MFA part of the program include historical and contemporary theater, law and the theater, and producing. In the MBA part, accounting, economics, and marketing are often taught. What is the best program for this?

Yale University

The MBA/MFA with Yale School of Drama joint-degree program gives you an MBA from SOM and an MFA in theater management. It is for people who want to be leaders in the theater and other performing arts fields. You will, as a joint-degree student, spend your first two years at the Yale School of Drama, your third year at Yale SOM, where you will take the integrated MBA curriculum, and your fourth year you will be taking electives at both schools. If you want to get a joint degree, you must apply to and be accepted by both programs separately. You can apply to both programs at the same time, or you can apply to Yale SOM while you are still in the School of Drama.

2. MBA/MFA in Art or Art History

MBA and MFA dual-degree programs in art (studio art) or art history usually take three to four years. This program will prepare you for management jobs in the art field, like running a museum or gallery, or improve the artistic and creative skills of business leaders in areas like marketing. The first year, you can take art or art history classes and the second year, you can take MBA classes, or vice versa. Most of the time, the third year will be a mix of the first two. Studio art students take courses in contemporary art, courses in the area of specialization, and/or seminars with visiting artists for their MFA. Art history students, on the other hand, take courses in art history and seminars with visiting scholars. Art students who don't know much about business might be told to take math and economics classes before the MBA part, but they can also take MBA classes in organizational management, accounting, and strategic problem-solving for organizations. What is the best program for this?

University of Colorado Boulder

The three-year program at the University of Colorado Boulder will give you the chance to get both degrees in less time than if they got them one after the other.  Each program has its own application process and requirements that you must meet. If you are accepted, you will spend your first year in one of the two programs, your second year in the other program, and your third year doing both. MFA students have to take 43 credits worth of MBA courses and 45 credits worth of AAH courses. MA (art history) students have to take 30 credits of art history courses and 43 credits of MBA courses. Both degrees must be awarded at the same time.

3. MBA/MFA in Producing

An MBA and MFA in Producing usually takes three years and will prepare you to become a leader or executive in the entertainment industry. You will learn how to produce movies by working on a wide range of film projects and internships. Some of these dual-degree programs may require an MFA thesis, which is usually finished in the third year of the program. The MFA part of this program may include courses on screenwriting, story development, independent films, and production, while the MBA part may include business courses specific to the entertainment industry, like the business side of production, or more general business courses, like social media management and finance. What is the best program for this?

New York University

The MBA/MFA Dual Degree program is a partnership between NYU's Stern School of Business and the Tisch School of the Arts' Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television. During the three years, you will work toward both degrees at the same time.

The curriculum is tough and full of requirements. You must be accepted by both schools and spend about half of your time taking classes at each. You will work on a lot of exciting film projects, and will also have time to do internships. The main goal is to teach you (the next generation of industry leaders) the business and creative skills you will need to make entertainment that gets recognition and wins awards.
