THE STAR METHOD FOR MBA ESSAYS

USING THE STAR METHOD FOR YOUR MBA ESSAYS

You’ve probably heard about the STAR interview technique… for interviews. The STAR Interview Method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) offers a straightforward format you can use to answer behavioral interview questions. Prompts that ask you to provide a real-life example of how you handled a certain kind of situation at work in the past. But it is an excellent method to use for MBA essay writing too.

The questions are easy to identify, and often have telltale openings like:

  • Tell me about a time when…

  • What do you do when…?

  • Have you ever…

  • Give me an example of…

  • Describe a…

The STAR method is a helpful way to organize essays, short-answers and even resume bullet points for your MBA application. For example, let’s take an essay question that asks you to describe your greatest professional achievement – in only 300 words.

When using the STAR method for your MBA essay writing, you will be able to shape this answer in a logical and readable manner.

  1. First off, you’ll want to set up the Situation for the reader as concisely and clearly as possible. Remember, the admissions committee wants to know what YOU did. Therefore, leave out details that describe the intricate complexities of your company or your client’s issues.

  2. Secondly, identify the Task that you were responsible for. The admissions committee is asking you to describe what your most impressive accomplishment is, and therefore, wants to understand what YOUR marching orders were. Be hesitant to include what a great team player you are here.

  3. Thirdly, the Action section is where you explain a bit more. Explain what you did specifically and show how you went above and beyond in your role. Use this chance to shine.

  4. Finally, wrap up your answer by revealing what Results you achieved. Keep in mind that both qualitative and quantitative outcomes are important to include, if possible.

Once you’ve gone through every element of the STAR method in your answer, read through your MBA essay again. Make sure you emphasize the Actions you took and the Results you achieved. Sometimes, it’s difficult to condense a project that took years to complete into only 300 words. But tell the story of your achievement in a clear and concise way using this method. This will help you look compelling and memorable. Focus on why YOU will be a great addition to any MBA program to make your MBA application shine.
